Action Plan For Clinical Massage Therapy

Image
Occasionally referred to as an orthopedic massage,  Clinical Massage Therapy  from a Registered Massage Therapist is an entire array of manipulation techniques designed to assess and then treat soft tissue injuries. Some of the clinical massages are listed below, but are not limited to:  massage therapy, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, muscle-energy techniques, craniosacral therapy, deep tissue massage and others. But most importantly, whenever you go for a massage to help you with muscle and joint related issues, make sure a  registered massage therapist  performs the massage. Clinical massage therapy is usually based on a physician’s prescription and directives, as a series of treatment sessions have to be performed over a set period of time, at specified frequency, related only to a specific need.  In that regard, the massage therapy is most often performed with a particular and purposeful outcome in mind, and its first and foremost o...

Effects of Physiotherapy on Knee Arthritis: How can it help?

Image
Physiotherapy is a therapy used to help ease many forms of pain and is able to aid in maintaining movement of joints and muscles. Once your knee joint has been assessed by a physiotherapist they come up with a unique and individualized action plan to do their best to help improve your symptoms. Through this action plan the physiotherapist would be managing pain through various techniques as well as improving muscle strength to reduce the strain on the affected joint. The overall goals of a physiotherapist would be pain management and improvement in fitness levels, flexibility and mobility. Some pain relief treatments that would be used by a physiotherapist to manage pain would be ice packs or heat packs with IFC (interferential current therapy). The electrical current is felt as a tingling sensation and is helpful with pain management because it interferes with the pain signals that are being transmitted to the brain. Although exercise is important to help strengthen the muscl...

Over The Counter Insoles VS Custom Foot Orthotics

Image
by  admin  |  Mar 5, 2019  |  Blog  |  0 comments There are many patients that have visited our clinic that have tried over-the-counter foot orthotics in the past. These OTC orthotics are designed based on statistically average foot shapes and foot function. They provide “general” arch support and use materials and arch heights that accommodate most arch foot types. Although OTC orthotics may provide some relief for some, there will be many that will have persistent foot problems (or other joint problems such as knee or back pain) that will not be relieved with over the counter orthotics. This is because the vast majority patients have unique foot shapes and unique ways that they move that are different from others; everyone is unique in this regard. In a situation where OTC orthotics are not helping you, more support and more correction may be required and this is where a custom foot orthotic is usually required. Custom foot orthotics are de...

What is Acupuncture, How it Works and How it Can Help Your Pain

Image
by  admin  |  Mar 12, 2019  |  Blog  |  0 comments How Does Acupuncture Work? Most people know acupuncture to involve inserting needles into the body. Although there are different philosophies that aim to explain how acupuncture works (Eastern vs Western Medicine Approaches), I will focus on the modern biological perspective. From a modern biological perspective, acupuncture stimulates the body to balance itself. It achieves this through complex nerve-related pathways in our body that act on the immune system, nervous system and inflammatory systems. Acupuncture improves the flow of oxygen, nutrients and blood flow to nourish and help heal certain areas of the body naturally. It achieves this by causing your blood vessels to dilate and increase blood flow to specific areas of the body. It also helps to release our body’s natural painkillers, called endorphins to help block pain and help us feel relief. Some acupuncture points are actual...

The Muscle Knot Explained and How Massage Therapy Can Hel

We’ve experienced it before…a knot in your neck, back or other muscle that creates pain and tightness. What is a muscle knot anyway? A muscle knot is not actually a knot in the muscle at all. In fact, many Registered Massage Therapists use the term “adhesions” or “trigger points”, which are tight bands of muscle fibers that are stuck together which you or a therapist can physically feel upon touch. Adhesions are constantly stuck in a contracted state and affects the way the muscle works. When muscle fibers get like this, they get overused and stop bringing in new oxygen and blood and will start building up lactic acid and toxic wastes. This also makes the surrounding muscle fibers tight because they are constantly being pulled by that central point of the adhesion. All of this leads to an increase in nerve receptor activity, which can increase pain in the surrounding areas. When there are multiple adhesions in a muscle, we call this a trigger point. Trigger points are unique in the ...

5 Reasons You May Consider Wearing Compression Stockings

Image
1) You sit for long hours during the day at work The calf muscles contract and pressurize the veins in your lower legs when you walk or are physically active, allowing blood to flow back to your heart. When you are sitting for prolonged periods of time, such as at work, our inactivity of our calf muscles makes this natural circulation less efficient, which can result in fatigue, blood pooling or swelling in our lower legs. 2) You stand all day at work Movement encourages more blood flow back to the heart. Similar to sitting for prolonged periods, if we are standing long durations and are not using our calf muscles as much as we should, our natural circulation will be impacted. This is why many trade workers, cashiers, retail workers or any other workers who are required to stand for long hours without getting much movement become great candidates for use of compression stockings. The use of compression stockings among these workers can help them feel less fatigued and more e...
